Abstract

The differences in phonological systems between Indonesian and English systems are the central problems that university students often encountered in speaking practice. Students usually transfer the system of their own mother tongue to the target language. This article is intended to explore the problems of EFL students in Jenderal Soedirman University in speaking the target language correctly. The discussion focused on the typical mistakes that the university students made in phonological aspects. Analysis was given to problems in the aspect which occurred during their speaking class. It was hoped that this could become an idea of the EFL teacher to devise the materials for teaching students in tertiary level.

Syaifur Rochman

Syaifur Rochman obtained his B.A. from Faculty of Letters, English Department, Diponegoro University, Semarang, majoring in Linguistics. He got scholarship from AusAid to complete his B.Ed, and M.Ed. TESOL from La Trobe University, Melbourne. Syaifur Rochman completed his Doctor in Curriculum Development from Indonesia University of Education, Bandung, majoring in Information Technology in Education. He was awarded scholarships to attend short courses, training, and conferences in United Kingdom, Sweden, Honduras, the USA, Malaysia, India, and Thailand. His research concern is in TEFL and cultural studies. At present, Syaifur Rochman is a Senior Lecturer in TEFL at English Language and Literature Study Program, Department of Humanities, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Jenderal Soedirman University.
